Ch. 12 - Hollywood was just waiting for Jack of Fables

[Today, Jack Horner returned from his mission feeling rather smug. It was more work than it was worth, but Jack had returned with a set of DVDs for the Jack Tales. He may have lost every cent from the trilogy thanks to that bastard Beast from Fabletown, but he still had the movies and that was all that mattered. So after proudly bragging about them to Buffy at the bar, he plugs the first movie into her DVD player and then positions his journal to provide all of Luceti with a video stream of the first movie:

After the three hour movie is over, he turns the journal over to himself.]

That's part one of my life story. Pretty amazing, right? Of course, it was way better in real life, but Hollywood can only do so much. I'll wait 'til I show you the next one, though. Back home, people had to wait a whole year. But I think a month ought to do.

[For non-movie related shenanigans, Jack can be found at Good Spirits at 10PM after the movie is over, serving up drinks and doing general bartender-y type things.]

[She was going to order something non-alcoholic, but with his "greeting" she decides:]

Only if it's a rum-and-coke.

[Oh, so it's like that, is it? He steps up and crosses his arms.]

I'm gonna need to see some ID first.

ID? Buffy has served me alcohol before!

I'm twenty, Jack. That's old enough back home for me to have been drinking for a couple years.

Sorry, Win. But this is an American-run bar you're in and the drinking age is twenty-one. I'd send you to Cloud Nine, but the asshole who stole it from me was sent home. So I think it's closed for business now.

[She slams her hand down on the counter top.]

That's bullcrap! You can't treat me like a child just because that's what you remember!

[ ex-mama over here is busy trying to strong-arm the door to the storage room. it'd been sitting wonky on its hinges all damn day, and buffy has grown tired of the way it catches on the floor tiles every time she tries to to nudge it closed.

but winry's outburst draws her attention. she glances at the pair. ] Oh, for God's sake -- Horner. Give the girl her cocktail. Use the good rum. Not the Screech.

[ her tone sweetens when she addresses the girl directly: ] Hi, Win.

[Jack is unfazed by Winry's outburst, but orders from the boss. Jeez. He wildly gestures to Winry.]

You're condoning a felony here, Buffy!

[She offers a smile and polite wave to Buffy before turning back to Jack.]

Maybe in your world, but not mine. Hell, I could be married right now! [Maybe if she was back home. Would she even be this far in her relationship with Ed by now back there?]

[ she relents from her task, and drops a screwdriver onto the counter. ] Don't try to play the vinegar to my honey. You'll never win, Horner.

[ buffy grabs a bottle of rum and tosses it casually towards jack. ] Like she says, if she's old enough to marry? She's certainly old enough to drink.

[ after all, wasn't it some combination of the two that had led to the great horner dynasty back in luceti valley? ]

[Jack begrudgingly sets the rum on the counter between him and Winry.]

Hey, in my world I was drinking at eleven. But I was also slaying giants. Not exactly the kind of world for setting examples.

[She looks at it still frowning. This still isn't exactly the drink she asked for.]

It's not like I'm asking you to hand over a six pack of beer.

...You forgot the coke.

[ matter of fact. ]

I was getting to it, boss.

[He heads to the fridge to retrieve a can of soda and sets it unceremoniously on the counter before mixing it.]

You better not be going for the six packs, Win. Nobody is gonna wear a girl with a beer gut.

Don't say that like I don't work enough to keep it off!

Besides, Horner -- people come here for frothy goodness, not dieting advice.

[Jack looks back and forth between the two women, clearly seeing that he's losing at this one. He finishes the drink and pushes it forward with little fanfare.]

Fine. But next time I'll use Diet Coke.

Ew, don't be gross.

[Winry takes a sip of her drink as she looks between both of them. She can't help but feel... nostalgic.]

Hey now, let's not demonize the Diet Coke. It's gotten me through many a hot So-Cal afternoon. A bit of ice. A twist of lime. Sometimes, I even prefer it to the regular Coke.

[ she's sharing that nostalgic vibe, leaning a hip against the counter and leaning forward just so she could sneak a little paper umbrella into winry's drink. ] There. You should slap him for giving you the sub-premium drink experience.

No slapping the barkeeps. We got standards here.

[Even he, who is several more years remove from it than them, feels that familiar vibe. It's uncanny, because he's never actually had it before Luceti. It's kind of annoying.]

Oh no, I wouldn't want to risk the chance of getting grounded.

[She rolls her eyes to emphasize how done she is with being treated like a fifteen year old.]

Oh. Hun. Please don't tell me he's threatened you with a grounding.

[ seriously, jack.

Don't think it hasn't crossed my mind!

[He was mostly joking. Mostly.]

You don't have the power to do that anyway.

[She quickly throws up a hand to wave so that she may dismiss that thought.]

...The girl has a point.

Buffy, you can't side against me on this one. You're gonna confuse her. We're supposed to be a team.
